INTRODUCTION

Risks   to   patients,  staff,  and  organizations  are  prevalent  in
healthcare.  Thus,  it  is  necessary  for  an  organization  to  have
qualified  healthcare risk managers to assess, develop, implement, and
monitor  risk  management  plans with the goal of minimizing exposure.
There  are  many  priorities  to  a  healthcare  organization, such as
finance, safety and most importantly, patient care.

Traditionally,  the  field of risk management focused primarily on the
concept  of  reducing  liability  and exposure to risk. Over time, the
field  has  broadened  into  enterprise  risk  management  (ERM) which
combines  the features of traditional risk management with utilization
review  and  quality assurance systems. This new model provides health
care  organizations  with  risk  managers  who  are focused on patient
safety as the guiding principle, and measurement of quality outcomes.
