Instrumentation is described as “The Art and Science of Measurement
and Control”, or the art and science in the application of measuring
instruments and control system on an object for the purpose knowing
the numerical value of a quantity variable process and also for the
purpose of controlling the amount of the order is within the
particular area or the magnitude of the desired value (set point).
Operation in process industries such as oil refineries and
petrochemicals is very dependent on the amount of measurement and
control process. Some amount of process that should be measured and
controlled at an industrial processes, for example the flow in the
pipeline, the pressure inside a vessel, the temperature in the heat
exchange unit, as well as the surface (level) liquid in a tank.
Process control is an engineering discipline that deals with
architectures, mechanisms and algorithms for maintaining the output of
a specific process within a desired range. Advanced process control
(APC) refers to a broad range of techniques and technologies
implemented within industrial process control systems. Advanced
process controls are usually deployed optionally and in addition to
basic process controls. Basic process controls are designed and built
with the process itself, to facilitate basic operation, control and
automation requirements. Advanced process controls are typically added
subsequently, often over the course of many years, to address
particular performance or economic improvement opportunities in the
process.
APC can increase production, reduce energy consumption, increase
capacity, improve the quality and consistency of products, improve
security processes and reduce environmental emissions. These benefits
provide a huge benefit to the industry and can be achieved only by
reducing the variability of the process, since the plant should be
operated in accordance with its design capacity. A plant process (exmp
: heat exchangers, pressurized vessel, etc.) in operation require
instrumentation to support safety.
